Nwanyị oma “Beautiful Woman,” is an ode to Nigerian womanhood, dark skin, tall frames, and the kind of beauty that doesn't always get celebrated. It's also an ode to me. After years of self-hatred, this series is the place where I am reminded to love myself unapologetically.
Chidozie means "may God fix it." Out of all the shapes I work with, semicircles are my favorite. This is my favorite drawing in the series because it's named after me. As I was creating her, I felt connected to this drawing, her style, the colors I chose, all of it shapes how I see this image. I love the colors in her top and her hair, and her skin tone is the closest to mine. Chidozie is a traditional masculine name of Igbo origin from Nigeria, one that isn't typically given to women, but the meaning behind it embodies who I am, so I named this piece after me.
